Spain Income Tax 2025: State vs Regional Rates
2026-02-16
Spain's income tax is unusual: a state scale sets the baseline, but each autonomous community layers its own regional rates on top. The result is that two people with the same salary can pay noticeably different tax depending on where they live.
State (national) brackets 2025
| Income up to | Rate |
|---|---|
| €12,450 | 19% |
| €20,200 | 24% |
| €35,200 | 30% |
| €60,000 | 37% |
| above | 45% |
These apply to your general taxable base. Regional brackets then modify the rates within each band — communities such as Madrid and Andalucía have historically offered lower regional scales, while others sit closer to the state baseline.
Social security
Employee social security (cotizaciones) is a separate deduction: roughly 6.35% on the common contingency base (plus small unemployment and training contributions), capped at a maximum contribution base. It's far smaller than the income tax for most earners but still reduces net pay.
Effective position
A median Spanish earner keeps roughly 72% of gross after income tax and employee social contributions — among the lower-deduction countries in our Europe tax ranking. High earners feel the 45% top rate and regional add-ons much more.
